Swarts named Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor

Congratulations to Dr. Jason Swarts of the MSTC Department for being named an Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor for CHASS.

Dr. Swarts was born in Muscatine, Iowa and lived there until he was eight and his family moved to Galesburg, Illinois. He lived there until he married in 1993.

He earned his B.A. degree in English (with a concentration in literature) and his M.S. in Teaching of Writing from Illinois State University and his Ph.D. in Communication and Rhetoric (concentrations in Technical Communication and HCI) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Dr. Swarts’ has been a member of the NC State faculty since 2002 and his current research interests are in the emerging and changing genres of technical communication and community-based forms of help and he is interested in studying mobile networking and the ways that we use information to achieve coordination with each other.

His research is currently focused on understanding how communities of scientists learn to use open source science software and he is examining the role of software forums as sites where software issues are being articulated and turned into ad hoc documentation through the distributed efforts of other scientists who are part of the software community.
